Discourse Communities in Soccer

I know you're probably wondering, what on earth is that picture! At first sight, it may look like a bunch of people in uniform at a church service, and it's exactly that, but the bigger question is, why? Why are there people in uniforms in a church. For someone that has no knowledge of what is happening, they must think these people are crazy. For me though, that's a whole community right there. A community whom I can connect with so easily and have made great friendships thanks to this group. This is a picture of Chivas de Guadalajara fans, a Mexican Soccer league team, going to a church service in order to pray for their team. It sounds crazy, going to church for a sports team, but for these fans, this team is everything, and I am part of those people. I have been a fan of this team and league in general since I was 6 years old, and ever since then, I have not stopped watching it. I can probably name you the last 10-15 champions of the league. I am a crazy fanatic and will continue to be for a good while. The community I will be talking about are Liga MX fans.

There are millions and millions of fans that watch and support teams from this league all over Mexico, the United States and has even reached Europe. Most people who watch it are from Mexican descent and support the team they are originally from. For example, those who are Chivas fans, are most likely from the city of Guadalajara, in Jalisco, Mexico. Soccer is the most watched and played spot in Mexican and is considered to be the national sport. For centuries, soccer has been part of our lives, with even Aztecs and Mayans playing a form of soccer. The people who watch this league vary from all ages, race and genders. I watch it, my friends watch it, my parents, uncles, aunts, cousins and even grandparents know and watch this league. Although this league is a very professional league where big name players like Martial, Rafa Marquez, Hugo Sanchez and hundreds of more, just to name a few. The big value this league holds is its entertainment and the spectacular moments it can give you. There are 18 teams in the league, and due to its rules, 10th place can technically become champions. Is it fair, no, but that's what makes it so special. It's so serious and unserious at the same time, it's amazing. Something else it values is giving the smaller teams a chance, relegation and promotion. there are 4 divisions in this federation, and something people hold dearly is letting teams from lover divisions promote themselves to better leagues and letting bad teams struggle and relegating them down to a lower division. How Does Promotion & Relegation Work in Soccer? The Mexican Soccer Federation, or FMF, does not include this type of system due to them mainly thinking about how the league will benefit them economically, but, thanks to the millions who demanded this system to come back by protesting and signing and giving their opinions on social media, they have promised that for the 2026 season, it will come bac with no regulation, and smaller teams will now be able to compete with bigger and better teams. The CAS Confirms the Return of Promotion and Relegation in Liga MX for 2026

The way I can communicate with other fans of this league is social media. I am in group chats where all they talk about his Chivas, the team I support. It's also a way for other to share news and opinions about the team, and even some of the players are part of the group, which I think is amazing. I think the only way to be able to learn about this league and have more participation is to just watch it. The good news is, if you are in the States, you will now be given access to watch it with English coverage through Paramount + CBS Sports to air Liga MX games in English

This league is a big part of my life, it basically revolves my days, trying to make plans before or after these games, in order to watch my team play, and what I love is the fanbase, and how loyal the people are. There are obviously exceptions, but most of the people are really nice people who just enjoy watching the game, and we all share a passion for this sport.
