Relegation and Promotion
Relegation and Promotion in soccer can bring up so many emotions to one team. If you had a bad season, in most cases, you would relegate to a division with less competition and if you're in a division with less competition, and have a great season, you would promote to a better division. This format makes up many amazing stories for some and brings so much heartbreak for others. It's an essential part to any soccer league, except in Liga MX. In Mexico, there is no such thing as promotion and relegation, and it is something the fans have been protesting to bring back. During the Covid 19 pandemic, it was decided by the Mexican Soccer Federation that due to the economic crises, they would put a pause from relegation and promotion in order for a team to not maybe disappear and let teams have time to establish themselves economically. Although it sounds like a good idea, they have stretched it out too much, and lower division teams and fans of Mexican soccer have been demanding a chance to come back. "We reiterate our total willingness to work in coordination with the FMF in the construction of solid, transparent and sustainable competitions, which strengthen the collective development in the industry of our national football." Promotion and relegation return, but not for now: TAS rejects application for MX Expansion teams | THIS online
The reason promotion and relegation are so important in not only the Mexican soccer league, but worldwide, is because it gives winning and losing actual meaning. Lower division teams can't aspire for more and higher division teams don't have to worry if they perform poorly, because they know they have a secured spot for next season, it gives it an extra seasoning if you will. "Promotion and relegation are more than just mechanisms for shifting teams between divisions—they are the heartbeat of competitive soccer leagues worldwide. They foster ambition, reward excellence, and punish complacency, ensuring that every match has something at stake." How Does Promotion & Relegation Work in Soccer?
The Mexican soccer fans demanded this system to come back for years, and after even taking this situation to the Supreme Court, it has finally been approved, and by 2026, promotion and relegation will now be part of the Mexican soccer pyramid, and I am waiting anxiously for it. I may finally see my favorite second division team compete in the maximum circuit of Mexican soccer, La Liga MX.
